| ...in early 1862 Lew Wallace was a rising star in the Union Army. The youngest Major General, commander of a division in U. S. Grants army. Wen he died in 1905 he would be famous as the author of Ben Hur. In between however, his life fell, at times, under a cloud because of the events of April 6, 1862, the first day of the Battle Shiloh. Grant had sent for Wallace's division camped a few miles away but Wallace didn't arrive until nightfall. He would spend a lifetime explaining why.
